About Us

Edutech Institute

We believe every child can – and wants to – do well at school.

Every child can.

This is the reality: children don’t fall behind because they lack potential, but because they get lost in overcrowded classrooms, taught by overwhelmed teachers or simply learn differently from their peers.
At Edutech, we’re proving that every learner – irrespective of their background – can succeed if they have access to the right tools and focused support.

“We live in a world that quietly assumes some children will do better than others. Where school systems are built on low standards but high expectations.

At Edutech, we see things differently. We believe that every child can and wants to do well at school. That the difference between smart and slow isn’t ability; it’s opportunity.”

Edutech turns potential into progress.

As an established edtech business, we take the burden of driving measurable learning gains across Africa seriously. Edutech currently serves schools across South Africa, Zambia and Kenya, with plans to reach 3 million users across the continent in the next 5 years.

We provide students in grades 1 to 10 with access to personalised and adaptive learning software: AI-driven educational programmes that identify each child’s unique learning challenges and misconceptions and remediate these through a tailored learning journey.

Our goal at Edutech is to ensure every child catches up to their appropriate grade-level, helping them master not just the required curriculum content, but the underlying understanding and ability to apply their knowledge in the real world.

The Edutech story

Edutech was founded by South African entrepreneur Dolan Govender. After matriculating, Dolan was only able to attend university due to the generosity of his extended family and church community, who took out personal loans and shared their grant money so he could afford tuition, bus fare and textbooks. Their kindness instilled in him a deep appreciation for the power of education, and a lifelong desire to pay their generosity forward.

While at university, Dolan worked as a tutor to support himself. One of his students – a matric learner scoring just 28% for maths – made a particular impact on him. Realising his understanding of basic maths concepts was lacking, Dolan purchased a grade 8 textbook for the student to help him master the subject’s core principles. The student went on to pass matric maths, reaffirming Dolan’s belief in the transformative power of personalised education.

After graduating, Dolan built a career in sales and marketing and went on to launch his own CRM company. Yet his passion for education – particularly for helping learners master foundational STEM subjects – never faded.

In 2019, Dolan connected with Educational Initiatives (EI) in India, the world’s leading educational research organisation. Inspired by their mission to ensure every child learns with true understanding, and by the proven efficacy of their learning software, he secured an exclusive mandate to bring EI’s pioneering educational technologies to Africa.

And so, Edutech was born.

“My country and my people are important to me. It has been my lifelong goal to create opportunities for South Africans. Edutech was founded to directly combat a flawed education system by offering an innovative, personalised learning environment. I believe this to be the best way of helping the youth of this country reach their true potential.”

We exist to give every child a chance.

A chance – irrespective of their backgrounds, the size of their classroom or learning gaps – to learn and master the subjects essential to their future. A chance to be seen and supported as an individual worthy of that support. For learning to feel fun and rewarding, with the confidence that comes from true understanding. A chance to feel believed in, surrounded by people and systems wholeheartedly committed to their growth and success.
